A UX checkpoint is an intentional moment where the interface makes a process visible so the user understands what is happening.

Useful friction can improve trust and comprehension.

When to Use It

Use a checkpoint when the user is about to:

  • confirm an important action
  • submit sensitive data
  • accept an automated suggestion
  • move to the next major step
  • recover from an error

Good Checkpoints

Good checkpoints slow the user down for a reason.

They should clarify:

  • what will happen next
  • what the user can still change
  • what risk or uncertainty exists
  • how to continue or cancel
