What Makes a Good Research Topic

A research topic is not only about the object of study. It must address that object from a particular angle, in relation to a concept.

Function of a Research Question

A research question works as a guiding device. It gives the project a line to follow through the different stages of research.

Its main job is maintaining the focus of the project.

  • Focused and Specific
  • Complex
  • Researchable
  • Feasible

What to Avoid

  1. Avoid yes/no questions because they do not provide enough range for complexity.
  2. Avoid rhetorical questions because they do not need an answer.
  3. Avoid closed questions because questions with easy factual answers usually lack complexity.
  4. Avoid leading questions where you already know the answer.
